Jack Of Sound talks about Mashup Jack

Since Chris started producing he has always been putting tracks together to create wild mashups. We caught up with him and talked about mashing up tracks, why he started a live act called Mashup Jack and what’s coming next from him.

I think one of the most interesting questions is, how did you start with making mashups, who came up with the idea of Mashup Jack and what is fascinating about it?
I started producing by creating mashups of different tracks when I was 12 years old. So that’s basically the origin, I cut out samples and put them together. Since I didn’t really know how to produce at that time, I mixed nearly everything together and sometimes it sounded really nice. I kept on doing that.

When I was playing as Jack of Sound I noticed that some of my mashups didn’t really fit in my sets anymore. I wanted to keep on making and palying mashups so I thought of doing a separate act for my mashups. Mashup Jack was born!

How do you choose the tracks for a mashup and how do you combine them?
It normally starts with a track I like or I scroll through my library and I think of two or more tracks that could fit together. I like to combine different styles and elements, to create some cool new tunes, no matter if it’s oldschool, new tracks or tracks from a completely different genre.

Is there a limit of tracks you can mashup together? What are the difficulties of mashing up two or more tracks?
Actually, yes, because you have to look at the chords and the key of the track. You can pitch the tracks, so they fit the chords of the other tracks, but you can’t do that with every track. For example, the track with Adele’s vocals together with So High by Noisecontrollers – you cannot pitch Adele’s voice!

Is there a special meaning behind your outfit?
My outfit represents the basics of a mashup, two different tracks forming one new track. That’s why the outfit consists of two different parts forming one outfit!

How was your experience at Megabase as Mashup Jack?
It was so cool! The stage was awesome and the vibe was amazing. I was so happy to be a part of it – not only as Mashup Jack but also as Jack of Sound! I really enjoyed it, since the weather was nice too!

What are your future plans as Mashup Jack? I guess you want to keep it special, so we can expect only a few performances, but is there anything special upcoming? How was your Defqon.1 experience?
It was incredibly awesome – the tent was packed to the max and the vibe was amazing during my set. So many people gathered together – it was a special moment. I prepared a lot for this 30 minutes and I’m really satisfied with my performance.

For the rest of the year, I’m  just very happy with the bookings I got! Stay up to date on my Facebook page so you don’t miss it. Also thanks everyone for the support, since the kick-off the respons has been more than great thank you all for that!
